How to Troubleshoot DNS Health Issues
If you're having trouble accessing your website-or if it works on your device but not for others-there may be a problem with your DNS settings.
DNS (Domain Name System) connects your domain name to the correct server. When something goes wrong with the DNS setup, websites may stop loading, emails may not work, or services may act unexpectedly.
Here's a step-by-step guide to help you find and fix common DNS issues using cPanel and WHM on Vivint Host servers.
1. Check the DNS Health Report
Start by checking if your domain's DNS records are set up correctly.
You can use tools like DNS Checker or other DNS checkers to test your domain. These tools will show you if there are any problems, such as missing records or mismatched settings.
Look out for any red errors in the report-those usually mean something needs to be fixed.
2. Check Your Nameserver Configuration
If you're using a Reseller or VPS hosting plan from Vivint Host, you might be using custom or private nameservers.
Misconfigured nameservers are one of the most common DNS problems we see.
To set up private nameservers correctly, make sure you’ve done these two steps:
Step 1: Register Nameservers at the Domain Registrar
This step connects your domain to your nameservers. It must be done from the registrar where your domain is currently registered.
- If you bought the domain from Vivint Host, we’ll take care of this during setup.
- If you registered your domain elsewhere (e.g., GoDaddy), follow their instructions to register your custom nameservers.
Step 2: Set Up A Records and NS Records
Next, log into your hosting panel and create the right A and NS records for your domain.
Note: Both steps are required. Skipping one will cause DNS to fail.
If your domain was purchased from Vivint Host during signup, our system handles this automatically.
3. Edit the DNS Zone in WHM
Once you've identified an error, you can fix it by updating the DNS zone file.
To do this in WHM:
- Log into WHM
- Click “Edit DNS Zone” under DNS Functions
- Choose the domain with the issue
- Update or correct any records (A, MX, TXT, etc.)
This option is most useful for VPS and reseller users who manage several domains.
4. Edit the DNS Zone in cPanel
If you’re on a shared hosting plan, or helping someone who is, you can also manage DNS settings from cPanel.
To do this in cPanel:
- Log into cPanel
- Go to the Zone Editor
- Select your domain
- From here, you can add or change A, CNAME, MX, and TXT records
This tool is simple to use and gives you direct access to all DNS records.
