How to Set Up Private Nameservers (VPS and Dedicated Servers)

At Vivint Host, we give you full control over your hosting environment. If you're using a VPS or Dedicated Server with WHM/cPanel, you can configure custom private nameservers like ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com.

This guide will walk you through the steps of registering and setting up your own nameservers using the IP addresses assigned to your server.

If you're using a VPS or Dedicated Server with WHM/cPanel from Vivint Host, you have the option to configure your own private nameservers (such as ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com).

Step 1: Get Your Server IP Addresses

To begin, you’ll need the IP addresses that your custom nameservers will point to. These IPs are typically included in your Server Welcome Email. If you’re unsure, feel free to reach out to our support team via HelpDesk so we can confirm them for you.

Step 2: Register Nameservers at Your Domain Registrar

Once you have the IP addresses, proceed to register the nameservers through your domain registrar.

  • If your domain is registered with Vivint Host, follow our specific setup instructions.
  • If your domain is managed by another provider, contact their support team to assist with nameserver registration.

Step 3: Set Up Nameservers on the Server

After registration, you need to configure the nameservers within WHM:

  1. Log in to WHM and go to DNS Functions > DNS Zone Manager.
  2. Select the domain you’re configuring, and click Manage.
  3. Update the SOA (Start of Authority) record by entering your primary nameserver (ns1.yourdomain.com) and a valid contact email.
  4. Next, add A records for both: (ns1.yourdomain.com)  (ns2.yourdomain.com

Special Case: Using Nameservers for the Same Domain

If you want your domain (e.g., yourdomain.com) to use these new nameservers (ns1.yourdomain.com, ns2.yourdomain.com), make sure you:

  • Set these nameservers on the domain registrar's side, and
  • Reflect the same in WHM > DNS Zone Manager > domain > NS records and SOA record.

Optional: Apply to All New cPanel Accounts

To ensure your private nameservers are automatically assigned to every new cPanel account you create:

  • Go to WHM > Basic WebHost Manager Setup > Basic Config
  • Enter your nameservers (ns1.yourdomain.com, ns2.yourdomain.com) into the designated fields.

Final Step: Wait for DNS Propagation

DNS updates may take 24 to 72 hours to propagate across the internet. Once complete, your custom nameservers will be fully active.

What Next!

Your private nameservers are now set up and ready to use with your VPS or dedicated server at Vivint Host. If you need help at any step or prefer a hands-on walkthrough, our expert support team is available 24/7 - no scripts, just real help from real people.
