How to Set Up 301 Redirects in cPanel (Permanent Redirects)
A 301 redirect is a permanent way to send visitors and search engines from one URL to another. It’s essential when you’ve moved a page, renamed a directory, or changed your domain name. Unlike temporary redirects, a 301 tells browsers and search engines that the change is permanent, helping preserve your SEO rankings.
At Vivint Host, we make managing redirects simple with cPanel. Follow these steps to set up a 301 redirect correctly.
Why Use a 301 Redirect?
- SEO Preservation: Prevents loss of search engine rankings when URLs change.
- User Experience: Visitors automatically land on the correct page without encountering 404 errors.
- Security & Performance: When used on Vivint Host’s SSD-powered servers, redirects are processed efficiently and securely.
Step-by-Step: Creating a 301 Redirect in cPanel
Step 1: Log into Your Client Area
Start by signing into your Vivint Host client account.
Step 2: Access Your cPanel Dashboard
From your client area, navigate to your hosting package and open cPanel.

Step 3: Locate the Redirects Tool
Inside the cPanel dashboard, scroll to the Domains section. Click on Redirects.
Step 4: Configure Your Redirect
On the Redirects page, you’ll set up the redirect rule:
- Type: Select Permanent (301) from the dropdown menu.
- Domain: Choose the domain where the redirection will be applied.
- Path (Optional): Enter the specific page or folder path you want to redirect (e.g., index.php).
- Redirects To: Enter the full URL of the new destination (e.g., https://yournewsite.com).
- www. Redirection: Choose whether the redirect should apply only to www, non-www, or both.
- Wild Card Redirect: Check this option if you want to redirect all files within a directory to the same filename at the new location.
Step 5: Save Your Redirect
Once you’ve entered the details, click Add to apply the redirect. You’ll receive a confirmation that your 301 redirect has been successfully created.
