How to Upload and Manage Files Using cPanel File Manager
Managing your website files shouldn’t be complicated. At Vivint Host, we make it simple with cPanel’s File Manager-a powerful tool that lets you handle all your files directly from your hosting dashboard.
Whether you need to upload, edit, delete, or organize files, this guide walks you through every step.
Accessing File Manager in cPanel
- Log in to your cPanel account (usually found at yourdomain.com/cpanel).
- Under the Files section, click File Manager.
Pro Tip: For quick access, use cPanel Shortcuts if enabled.
By default, File Manager opens in /home/username. You can change this in Settings (top-right gear icon).
Enable Hidden Files: Check Show Hidden Files (dotfiles) to see system files like .htaccess.

Key Directories
- public_html – Stores files for your primary domain.
/home/username/addondomain.com – Files for addon domains go here.

Go to Domains in cPanel > Check the Document Root column.
File Manager Interface Explained
The File Manager is divided into four key sections:
- Toolbar – Upload, delete, edit, and manage files.
- File Listing – Shows all files/folders in the current directory.
- Navigation Bar – Browse between folders.
Current Location – Displays your current directory path.

How to Manage Files in cPanel
Upload Files
- Navigate to the target folder.
- Click Upload (or drag & drop files).
- Select the file from your computer > Open.

Copy or Move Files
- Select the file(s) (use Ctrl/Cmd + Click for multiple files).
- Click Copy or Move.
- Enter the destination folder > Confirm.

Create a New File/Folder
- Navigate to the desired location.
- Click +File or +Folder.
Enter a name > Create.

Delete Files
- Select the file(s).
- Click Delete (or right-click > Delete).
- Optional: Check Skip trash to permanently delete.
Note: Deleted files stay in .trash for 90 days before auto-removal.

Restore Deleted Files
- Open the .trash folder (in /home/username).
- Select the file > Click Restore.

Rename Files
- Select the file → Click Rename.
- Enter the new name → Confirm.

Edit Files
- Select the file > Click Edit (or use HTML Editor).
- Code Editor – Best for scripts (PHP, JS).
- HTML Editor – Visual & source editing.

????️ Compress Files (ZIP/GZ/BZ2)
- Select files > Click Compress.
- Choose format (ZIP, GZ, BZ2) > Name the archive > Compress.


Extract Files
- Select the archive > Click Extract.
Choose destination > Extract.


Change File Permissions
- Select the file > Click Permissions.
Set numeric values (e.g., 755 for folders, 644 for files) > Change.
